Más Tacos Ep. 1

Updated: Dec 17, 2019

Mexico City is well known for its wide-variety of taquerías on every corner of the city. I, like the majority of the world population, is deeply fond of this delicious Mexican dish. I felt it was my duty, since I am now living in Mexico City, to explore little by little each and every corner of the city to explore and taste as many tacos as my heart desires. For my first round of tacos I explored around La Condesa in five different restaurants and here is what I have gathered. I'll be grading the taquerias from 1-10.

1. El Greco: 7.5⭐️

Taquería El Greco can be found in La Condesa in a little corner just two blocks from Parque Mexico. The tortillas are done fresh right on the very entrance with the pork split making it a fresh and fast service. What I loved about this taquería was the small size (about five to six small tables), giving it an authentic atmosphere. I ordered a taco de bistek with cheese. It was double tortilla, the cheese was melted on top and the meat was very tasty.

Address: Av Michoacán 54, Hipódromo, Cuauhtémoc, 06100 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico

2. Chetito 8.0⭐️

I have been to this taquería a few times before and I just love the wide variety of tacos. This place is more gourmet than a typical taco place. There are about all different types of tacos, seafood, pork, meat, and vegetarian. The place itself is nice to meet up with friends for tacos and drinks. The location is perfect for bar hopping afterwards since there are a few bars around. Every time I go I try a different one and they are all amazing it all depends on what you are in the mood for. I recommend asking the waiter for the specials since they are always changing.

3. Beatricita 5.0⭐️

Beatricita isn't actually a taquería but a very traditional Mexican restaurant. It has a menu of the day with a fixed price of $130 pesos which includes a soup, salad, main dish, drink, and dessert. For my main dish I ordered two rib tacos which were good, weren't that special but what was nice was the whole menu itself. I recommend coming here to have a very typical Mexican lunch, but if what you are looking for are authentic tacos I don't think this is the place.

4. Hayito 4.2⭐️

I wasn't planning on going to this place, originally I was going to a vegan taco place but it was closed and this one was right next to it. Hayito is an Arabian taquería (there are many taquerías like this because tacos like tacos al pastor originate from Arabian cuisine). Based on the lamb shawarma brought by Lebanese immigrants to Mexico, al pastor features a flavor palate that combines traditional Middle Eastern spices with those indigenous to central Mexico. But instead of lamb it was replaced with pork. Here I tried two tacos; one was the Arabian taco and the other was the oriental taco. The pork itself was very good but the Arabian taco came about to be a bit flavorless because of the tortilla. The tortilla was more like pita bread which is very thick. Arabian foods that are wrapped with pita bread have more than just meat but a mix of veggies, hummus, and spices making it very flavor-able. With just the meat it tasted a bid bland. I would probably go for the oriental taco which was with a small corn tortilla allowing the flavor of the meat to be a lot stronger.

5. El Califa 9.5⭐️

Dammit guys, this place seems to taste better and better the more I go here. El Califa simply won't disappoint. The ambiance is clean and open, the service is fast and kind, the salsas are both spicy and sweet, and tacos are made in heaven. This time around I had taco de bistek, de costilla and al pastor. Both the bistek and costilla I had with cheese. I ordered a guacamole on the side which goes great with all the tacos. This taquería is great for anytime of the day or after a night out. There are sixteen of them all around the city so there will always be one close. They are all open from 1pm to 4am. From the five listed, this one takes the prize of the week.
